    With just a few hours of work remaining on the contract, the CAT 374DL elevated excavator sunk into a unknown soft area of seabed which collapsed as the digger passed over it and got stuck, then the tide came in. Power generators that are installed around the sea dome will make use of seawater temperature fluctuations to create even more energy, as part of an action known as thermal energy conversion. Hydraulic pressure helps produce desalinated water, which will in turn be jetted into the sphere. Staffers with the construction company believe the technology needed to make such a city exist will be available within the next 15 years.

But it's beyond the reach of humans: all of the construction has to be completed by ROVs (remote operated underwater vehicles). The Ormen Lange deposit also lies in a disaster zone called the Storegga slide, a geological scar left by a 300-km wide collapse of the Norwegian continental shelf 8,000 years ago. The pay-off for this ultimate engineering gamble is huge, but so are the risks -- great sea depths, highly irregular seabed terrain, strong underwater currents, sub-zero temperatures and extreme wind and wave conditions means one dangerous mission. The SBDE is standard pressure tight to 100 m. The SBDE is connected with a 400 m long umbilical cable to the control and transformer container. The SBDE control & transformer container needs to be power with 1000 kva (400 VAC/60 Hz) generator. The SBDE is connected to a 12”floating discharge hose. The umbilical cable also floats and can be retrieved with a special umbilical capstan. The SBDE is fully remotely operated from the control container. The controls are based on 2 joystick for all movements and driving. Further controls will be through a GUI (graphical human interface) which touchscreens. All data and movements will be visual in the GUI. Also the SBDE will be fitted with 1x scanning sonar to visualize the seabed surrounding the SBDE and 2x profiling sonars for scanning the dredge parts real-time during dredging. The GUI, sonars and cameras will be all visible on a 54” video wall screen of 4K resolution.

When the plate turns around, different rods can be pushed to a manipulator for drilling tasks. "Other drilling rigs can only twist their drilling rods for a half-circle at a time and then stop, and twist another half-circle. Ours can spin without stopping. So the Sea Bull can fasten drill rods quickly," said Wan Buyan, chief expert of Sea Bull project. The drill rods are designed for different rocks on the seabed as some are hard while others softer. "We have designed three kinds of drill rods. One is for hard rocks, the other for soft rocks mainly consisting of sediments. The last one is for drilling without taking any samples," said Huang Xiaojun, professor of Marine Resources Exploring Equipment Laboratory of Hunan University of Science and Technology. It took the Sea Bull 10 hours to drill 60 meters into the seabed to collect samples. "The successful experiment means that we have independently collect samples in deep water. This technological application will significantly promote our technologies in deep sea marine geological science and geotechnical engineering," said Zhou Yangrui, leader of inspection team of Sea Bull project. Recently while on a dive near Amami Oshima at the southern tip of the country, Ookata spotted something he had never encountered before: rippling geometric sand patterns nearly six feet in diameter almost 80 feet below sea level. He soon returned with colleagues and a television crew from the nature program NHK to document the origins what he dubbed the "mystery circle." Underwater cameras showed that the artist was a small puffer fish who, using only his flapping fin, tirelessly worked day and night to carve the circular ridges. The unlikely artist -- best known in Japan as a delicacy, albeit a potentially poisonous one -- even takes small shells, cracks them, and lines the inner grooves of his sculpture as if decorating his piece. Further observation revealed that this "mysterious circle" was not just there to make the ocean floor look pretty. Attracted by the grooves and ridges, female puffer fish would find their way along the dark seabed to the male puffer fish where they would mate and lay eggs in the center of the circle. In fact, the scientists observed that the more ridges the circle contained, the more likely it was that the female would mate with the male. The little sea shells weren't just in vain either. The observers believe that they serve as vital nutrients to the eggs as they hatch, and to the newborns. What was fascinating was that the fish's sculpture played another role. Through experiments back at their lab, the scientists showed that the grooves and ridges of the sculpture helped neutralize currents, protecting the eggs from being tossed around and potentially exposing them to predators.
